KUALA LUMPUR (July 6): Malaysia’s newly confirmed Covid-19 cases soared to 7,654 — the highest level in 31 days since June 5 — compared with yesterday’s 6,387.
Nearly 43% or 3,260 new cases were detected in Selangor, where several districts and sub-districts are under the Enhanced Movement Control Order for two weeks until July 16, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).
Kuala Lumpur also saw a drastic increase in new cases with 1,550 compared with yesterday’s 819. This is the highest number of daily new infections ever recorded in the capital of Malaysia.
The new cases in Negeri Sembilan, with a population of 1.13 million, were also stubbornly high at 698 today.
Meanwhile, Kedah reported 337 cases, Johor (313), Sarawak (286), Melaka (230), Sabah (225), Pahang (180) and Kelantan (118).
The country’s Covid-19 case tally climbed to 792,693, of which 265,722 are in Selangor.
There were 103 deaths linked to the virus today, bringing total fatalities to 5,677.
Of the latest fatalities, 43 deaths were reported in Selangor, 18 in Kuala Lumpur, 12 in Negeri Sembilan, nine in Johor, six in Kelantan, four in Pahang, three in Melaka, two each in Sarawak and Kedah and one each in Sabah, Perak, Labuan and Penang.
Daily recoveries, on the other hand, were lower than daily new infections at 4,797. In total, 714,815 recoveries were registered thus far, translating into a recovery rate of 90.17%.
Meanwhile, active cases surpassed the 70,000 level to 72,201 today.
The number of patients in intensive care units climbed to 943 from 923 yesterday, with 450 needing ventilators to breathe.
Separately, 21 new clusters were detected today — with 11 of the clusters from workplaces, nine the communities and one from a detention centre.
To date, the ministry has detected 2,952 clusters with 2,100 declared ended. That leaves 852 active clusters.
MoH also highlighted that currently Malaysia’s basic reproduction number (R-naught or R0) for Covid-19 infections nationwide now stands at 1.07, with Pahang having the highest R0 of 1.24.
This R0 or Rt projects the average number of people that each new Covid-19 patient will infect, or what is termed the effective reproduction number. An R0 of less than 1.0 means the infection is not spreading.
