Covid-19 Delays Junbai’s Arrival

MALAYSIA Swimming (MS) are grateful to have former national diver Leong Mun Yee around to help out as incoming new assistant coach Li Junbai’s arrival has been delayed.

Junbai will be assisting head coach Li Rui following the departure of Australian Christian Brooker last year.

However, the China-born will not be arriving soon due to the current Covid-19 situation.

Junbai, a former platform diver, represented China in several meets.

He had won the men’s platform gold medals at Diving Grand Prix events in Italy (2007) and Russia (2010).

The retired diver had also won the platform synchro title with Ying Hong at the 2008 Chinese National Diving Championships.

Five-time Olympian Mun Yee, who announced her retirement earlier this week, is helping Li Rui with the training programme.

And MS are grateful that the 37-year-old Mun Yee still has the fire to help out despite retiring.

“The new coach’s arrival might take some time because of the Covid-19 situation,” said MS secretary-general Mae Chen.

“Right now, we are not sure if he can even leave China. However, the process is being done, and we are hoping to have him arrive next month.

“In the meantime, Mun Yee has been helping Li Rui with the training, and we really appreciate it.”
