We’ll Soon Overtake China In Covid-19 Deaths, Says Kit Siang

PETALING JAYA: Malaysia will most likely overtake China in terms of the number of Covid-19 deaths by the end of this week, according to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

He said the difference is only about 159 deaths with the number of fatalities in China from Covid-19 currently at 4,636, compared with Malaysia’s 4,477 deaths as of yesterday.

“Malaysia also established another dubious record in the Covid-19 pandemic yesterday, having broken the 700,000 mark in the total number of Covid-19 cases, which now stands at 701,019.

“Today, we will establish another dubious record when our Covid-19 ranking will further worsen to 37, beating Switzerland, among nations in the world based on the total number of Covid-19 cases since the pandemic began,” Lim said in a statement.

The Iskandar Puteri MP compared it with last November, when Malaysia was ranked 85.

“Yet, we have people claiming that we are winning the war against the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Whether macro or micro, there is no argument whatsoever that we are fighting a losing battle against the Covid-19 pandemic and paying heavily not only in terms of human lives, but also in the devastation to the Malaysian economy and society,” he said.

As of yesterday, Malaysia recorded 701,019 Covid-19 infections with 62,918 active cases, of which 880 were receiving treatment in intensive care units (ICU).

Lim criticised the prime minister and his Cabinet for being “out of sync with reality” and refusing to accept the fact that the ongoing Emergency is not a solution to curb the Covid-19 pandemic.

He reiterated his support for the call by the King and Malay Rulers last week for Parliament and the state assemblies to meet “as soon as possible” to fight against Covid-19 and restore public trust and confidence.

With that, Lim urged the Cabinet to lay out plans to fight the worsening health crisis at its weekly meeting tomorrow.
