Dr Mah on Covid-19: Schools with positive case to be closed for at least two days

PETALING JAYA: Schools with as few as one confirmed Covid-19 case will now be ordered to close for at least two days, says Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.

The Deputy Education Minister said the affected students, following school closure, will switch to online learning until physical classes resume, reported Sin Chew Daily.

This decision, which took effect immediately Wednesday (April 21), would empower school authorities to issue a notice informing parents of school closure once there is a positive case.

“The number of positive cases have seen an uptrend recently, especially at areas with high cases,” said Dr Mah.

He added that to prevent clusters at schools, his ministry has decided to allow schools with even one positive case to close for at least two days.

“This will allow the school to undergo thorough sanitisation, while parents, students and teachers can have some time to calm down and avoid unwarranted worries or fears,” he said.

Dr Mah noted that the decision was made during a high-level ministerial meeting chaired by the Education Minister Dr Mohd Radzi Md Jidin earlier on Wednesday.

Since physical learning at schools resumed earlier this month, he said the ministry has been concerned and closely monitoring the pandemic at schools.

His office has also engaged with educationist groups such as the United Chinese School Teachers’ Association (Jiao Zong), United Chinese Schools Committees’ Association (Dong Zong), Malaysia Chinese Language Council, National Union of Heads of School and several parents groups for feedback and suggestions.

Dr Mah noted that during the two-day closure, district Health officers will conduct a risk review at the affected school to determine if the closure should be extended or lifted after two days.

“The district Health office will also arrange for teachers and students who need a Covid-19 test to do so.”

Dr Mah also said that the decision would be reassessed by the National Security Council.

“Any updates in school closure will be finalised by the NSC and announced later,” he added.
