Covid-19: 159 students from five schools in Johor Baru screened for Covid-19

JOHOR BARU: A total of 159 students from five schools here took Covid-19 screening on Sunday (April 18).

Johor health and environment committee chairman R. Vidyananthan said the tests were carried out at the One-Stop Covid-19 Assessment Centre (OSCAC) in Pasir Gudang and Bukit Indah.

“For every student and teachers that tests positive, the Health Department will be carrying out surveillance and close contact screening to make sure no outbreak happens in a school.

“This is why the students have been told to do the Covid-19 screening at the OSCAC, ” he said on Monday (April 19).

Vidyananthan said the spike in Covid-19 cases among students and teachers in Johor was due to social activities among families.

“Most of the cases are due to their social activities where they gathered with their relatives.

“This also includes families going for social activities at entertainment centres, attending weddings and sport activities in a group, ” he said, adding that the community should avoid organising social programmes as it would increase the risk of Covid-19 outbreak.

“Remember, Johor is not in a green zone with the conditional movement control order still imposed in the state, ” he said and reminded the public to always adhere to the standard operating procedures.

SJK(C) Pandan in a notice to parents confirmed that one of its Year Three pupils had tested positive on Thursday (April 15).

SJK(C) Foon Yew 1 in its notice said one of its Year Three pupils had also tested positive for the virus.

“As 10 of our teachers are currently under quarantine, the school received approval from the district Education Office to allow Year Three students to study from home for a week until April 24, ” read the notice posted on the school’s Facebook page.
