KUCHING: Over 100 of Sarawak’s 385 new Covid-19 cases on Tuesday (April 6) came from the Tembok cluster in Sri Aman prison, says Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah.

He said 128 new cases were linked to the cluster and were made up of prisoners, people working at the prison and the families of prison personnel.

“They comprise 122 prisoners, four prison staff members and two family members of prison personnel,” he said at the state disaster management committee’s Covid-19 briefing here.

The Tembok cluster was detected on April 4 after an inmate at Sri Aman prison tested positive on April 1 and currently has 288 confirmed cases.

Uggah said Sri Aman district recorded the highest number of new cases with 129, followed by Sibu (81), Bintulu (52), Miri (45), Kuching (22), Saratok (13), Lubok Antu (10), Marudi (six), Samarahan, Beluru and Asajaya (five each), Pakan (three), Sebauh, Mukah and Limbang (two each) and Bukit Mabong and Kanowit with one each.

This takes the state’s tally of confirmed cases to 18,164.

Uggah also said all community leaders must monitor and report any social activities, including weddings and funerals, to their respective district offices with immediate effect.

He said the committee made this decision after assessing the high number of cases linked to social gatherings.

“The district office will provide advice and assistance from relevant agencies to ensure compliance with standard operating procedures (SOP) during the social activities,” he said.

He added that community leaders played an important role in protecting their local community from Covid-19 and should advise them to adhere to the SOP.
