Covid-19: One New Cluster Detected in Shopping Mall, 225 New Infections in Sarawak

KUCHING: Another workplace cluster was detected in Sarawak involving the staff of a shopping mall in Miri, says the state disaster management committee.

It said the index case for the Jalan Merpati cluster was detected on March 7.

“The patient is a 45-year-old woman who works at the shopping mall. Further screening of close contacts at the workplace and family members resulted in 50 more positive cases.

“To date, 310 people have been screened with 193 of them came back negative and 66 others awaiting results,” the committee said in a statement on Wednesday (March 17).

The committee also said there were 225 new Covid-19 cases over the past 24 hours and 32 active clusters in the state.

Of the new cases, it said only 28 showed symptoms of the disease.

“A total of 184 of these cases were detected among individuals currently under quarantine, comprising 178 close contacts of positive cases and six who had returned from Johor, ” it said.

Districts with new cases were Miri (88), Kuching (32), Bintulu (30), Serian (18), Sibu (13), Sri Aman (12), Kapit (11), Meradong (seven), Bukit Mabong (five), Betong and Samarahan (four each) and Song (one).

The state’s tally of confirmed cases stood at 13,110.
