PETALING JAYA: A new Covid-19 cluster, dubbed the Ara cluster, has been detected in Penang, says the Health Ministry.
Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said the index case was a 44-year-old man who tested positive for Covid-19, after a screening at the Sandakan airport on Sept 15.
“Following that, contact tracing was carried out and one positive Covid-19 case was identified. This positive case is the niece to the index case.
“The patient tested positive on Sept 19 and is now receiving treatment at the Hospital Pulau Pinang, ” said Dr Noor Hisham in a statement on Sunday (Sept 20).
As of noon Sunday, 16 individuals had been screened, whereby 14 tested negative and two (the index case and his relative) were positive.
“The cause for the transmission is still being investigated, ” he said.
Meanwhile, on the status of the four clusters in Sabah, Dr Noor Hisham said the Benteng Lahad Datu cluster has so far recorded a total of 578 cases, after 27 new cases were detected from the cluster on Sunday (Sept 20).
Out of the 578 cases, 287 are Malaysians, 191 are Filipinos and 100 are Indonesians.
A total of 8,627 individuals had been screened in the cluster from Tawau, Lahad Datu and Sandakan.
The Selamat cluster, which recorded two new cases on Sunday, has a total of seven positive cases involving all Malaysians and 213 individuals had so far been screened, with 206 still awaiting results.
The Bakau cluster, which had one new case on Sunday (Sept 20), has a total of four cases currently involving two Malaysians and two Filipinos.
A total of 162 individuals had been screened with 158 awaiting their results.
The Pulau cluster, which also recorded one new case on Sunday (Sept 20), has a total of 15 cases, whereby 13 are Malaysians and two are Filipinos.
A total of 402 individuals from Kunak and Semporna were screened.
