PM Defends Bypassing Parliament to Allocate Urgently-Needed Covid-19 Funds

KUALA LUMPUR: Immediate measures were needed to address the Covid-19 pandemic and the challenges that came with it, prompting the government to swiftly allocate huge funds to cushion the economic impact.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, during the Question-and-Answer session at the Dewan Rakyat today, said the government could not wait for the funds under Prihatin (Prihatin Rakyat Economic Stimulus Package) and Penjana (the Economic Recovery Plan) to be tabled in Parliament due to the urgent nature of the situation.

He said various initiatives were carried out to protect the people and sectors badly affected by the pandemic.

He said the government was faced with a huge challenge to manage and handle Covid-19, which has crippled the globe.

“I have expected this question as we’ve heard about this before. Thus, the government had no choice but to take action even before Parliament started meeting. The Finance Minister will table the numerous incentives in detail during this session.

“We couldn’t wait for Parliament to start, as institutions were collapsing; businesses were collapsing. The people needed solutions (immediately).

“It is the responsibility of the government to safeguard the wellbeing of the people,” he said in reply to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim (PH-Port Dickson).
