RMCO: Interstate Travel Allowed, Overseas Travel Not Yet

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians who want to travel abroad will have to hold on a little longer as the country’s borders are still shut amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, under the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO), people are allowed to travel across states while domestic tourism is very much encouraged.

Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said the government took the step to loosen internal travel restrictions to kickstart the regeneration of the country’s economy which had been impacted since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was enforced on March 18.

“So, you can take your family to travel in the country while practicising the new norms after close to three months of not going anywhere. For those who desire to travel overseas, do wait as our country’s borders are still closed,” said Muhyiddin during a special live telecast today.

Muhyiddin had announced that Malaysia was now entering the RMCO which will start on June 10 and end on Aug 31.

During the RMCO, more relaxation will be imposed on previous restrictions that were set during the MCO and the Conditional Movement Control Order.

The government’s move to enforce the RMCO was due to the success of frontliners and Malaysians who played their part to ensure the curb of the Covid-19 infection.

On a related matter, Muhyiddin said Malaysians could celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha and conduct Qurban activities, subjected to the Standard Operating Procedures set by the Islamic authorities.

The government, he added, was in the midst of finetuning the rules on the number of congregations allowed based on the space of a mosque or a house of worship and its final details will be announced soon.

Schools, he said, will be reopened in stages during the RMCO after seeking the advice of the Health Ministry.

“The Education Ministry will make a detailed announcement on that soon,” said Muhyiddin.
