COVID-19: UTHM Volunteers Produce ‘Boot Cover’ Protect the Feet of Health Officers

In an effort to fight the epidemic of the COVID-19 outbreak, health officers need to wear a wide range of Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) as a shield to protect themselves from infection. Concerned about the problem of lack of supply in the hospital, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia’s volunteers’ team (UTHM) produces a ‘ Boot Cover ‘ design that works to reduce the risk of an exposed foot to a virus that can be infected through blood, liquid or air that contains virus.

The design of boot cover produced by the UTHM stitching solution team by using the plastic material has attracted the attention of the Sultan Ismail Hospital and Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Johor Bahru.
According to the project leader, Associate Prof. Dr. Kamarul-Azhar Kamarudin, a total of 50 pairs of boot cover has been successfully produced in just four days.

By only using plastic, rubber, and tape (masking tape), the sample then tested first to ensure the level of durability and slipperiness.
“All of the boot covers produced have been delivered to the representative of the Task Force C19 Johor on 31 March and was assisted by the youth organization of GEMA Johor as an official NGO to get the approval of the movement”.
“The official NGO who represents the UTHM will deliver the boot cover to both hospitals involved after being given approval,” he said.
He added, the main advantage of this PPE is that it is produced by the material that is easy to be found and simple and very practical to be used.
“Our team hopes that such efforts can provide an additional solution to health officers in improving their level of protection,” he said.
The success of previous technical solutions projects such as the production of intubation boxes and facial protectors became the catalyst for the university volunteer team to continue to contribute ideas and energy to help fight contagion of COVID-19.
